Birds will always flock to your home provided you give them a good source of nutrition. One superb delicacy for all categories of birds is dried mealworms. These can be spread on a bird feeder as they are; dried and crunchy or you can soak them in some warm water to make them soft and succulent. They are not only delicious to birds but they are also very rich in protein and are perfect for winter feeding and during nesting periods. If you opt to hydrate them, then you must clean the bird feeding tray often to avoid the growth of bacteria that may be harmful to the birds. The purpose behind feeding them is to make them healthier; not make them sick.
Another great bird attracting food is the Niger seed. This is an exotic type of fruit, known as an achene, which is sold as bird food. These are especially delectable to finches and spreading these on your bird feeding station will draw all sorts of finches in droves. You may need a few feeding stations too. They are rich in oils and other nutrients and also high in calories to give the birds the energy that they require when they are flying. The seeds are best put out a peak feeding times which are dusk and dawn. Due to the poor visibility afforded by the waning or rising sun, keep the station in a clear space so that they can see potential threats from predators in good time. The feeding stations in this case should also be kept clean to stop the spread of disease.
The third and probably most loved bird seeds are the Sunflower hearts. These are the wholesome insides of sunflower seeds. They are the ones that have the juicy sunflower oil that birds love. Most birds do not have the ability to break the sunflower husks and even those that do still prefer to find the seeds with the husks removed to leave the delicious hearts.
Always remember to position bird feeders away from predators and also provide some shelter against the elements in order to enjoy the company of birds in your backyard.
